This week marks a year since the tragic events in Israel which led to the current conflict in the region, and neighbouring countries. The horrific loss of life, injury and displacement of people continues, as does the ongoing anguish for the friends and families whose loved ones are still being held hostage.

Here at Beds SU, we are aware of the impact current conflicts taking place both in the Middle East and other parts the world may be having on individuals and wider communities. This includes members of our student community who may be feeling lonely, anxious and scared. We want to reiterate our position, that Beds SU is a place where ALL students should feel welcome, supported and safe.

If you need someone to talk to or a space to be with others then we and the University offer the following services:

Beds SU Advice – a team of highly trained advisors who offer confidential and personal support

Treehouse – the University’s community and multi-faith centre offers pastoral care

University Counselling service – confidential and impartial support

Outside of the University there are also a number of nationwide charities offering support including:

Student Minds – UK Student Mental Health support service

Mind – Nationwide Mental Health support charity

Students may also wish to reach out to faith groups that bring together students across the UK and you can find our more here. Due to the timing of this article we wish to specifically highlight those for students who are members of the Jewish and Muslim communities, who due to reports of increased Antisemitism and Islamophobia, since the events on October 7, 2024, may feel a greater need for wider support at this time:

Union of Jewish Students

Federation of Student Islamic Societies

Beds SU and the University do not condone and will not tolerate any form of prejudice or anti-social behaviour, including those termed Hate Crimes (motivated by an individuals, race, religion, sexual orientation or disability). Should you observe or experience any offensive, threatening or anti-social behaviour on or around campus you can contact the following services both within and outside the University for support:

Support & Report – University service

Report a hate crime – Govt support

Stophate UK – National charity

If you would like to read other articles from Beds SU related to our position on Antisemitism and Islamophobia you can do so here as well as articles on how we mark key dates in faith, cultural and inclusion calendars.
