The event, organised by the NUS, gives the opportunity for Students’ Union leaders across the country to meet with their various MPs on the same day to collectively advocate on key issues affecting students.
Housing issues
The day was hugely beneficial to students, particularly around housing issues. Currently, rental laws allow landlords to require tenants to have a UK-based property-owning guarantor.
For those who cannot meet this requirement, like working-class, estranged, or International students, landlords can demand up to a year’s rent in advance. This policy creates significant barriers to housing access and has contributed to 13% of students experiencing homelessness.
Chidera was lobbying for the removal of this guarantor requirement on behalf of our students.
After the event, Chidera said 'The outcome was positive, as several MPs acknowledged the impact of these issues on students and expressed support for amending the Renters’ Bill the MPs are working on.
We will be closely monitoring government actions on this issue and wait for NUS for next steps to take.'
Stay tuned for future developments...
