According to the National Union of Students (NUS), half of UK students and apprentices use public or personal transport to get to their place of study, but the cost of fares and petrol has become increasingly prohibitive.

This is further reflected in our very own Cost of Living survey, where around 60% of respondents expressed difficulties in affording travel, with 73% being in Bedford alone.

NUS survey

A 2023 NUS survey of more than 3,500 students found that 32% have skipped meals and 1 in 5 have missed classes due to the cost of travel.

As a result, the recent NUS campaign demands free and safe public transport for all students and apprentices across the UK.

Speaking on behalf of our Executive Officers, Laura Tamara and Ryan Murphy said:

"We have discussed this at executive level and are wholly in support of this campaign.

We believe it would make a huge difference to the high percentage of commuter students we support and those who have placement elements integrated in their course.".
