“I wish I knew about money, jobs, student deals"

Students and Council Tax

I wish I knew that, as a full-time student, I didn’t have to pay council tax. This could have saved me a lot of worry and confusion when I first moved into private accommodation. You can download your registration status document from eVision (on mybedslife app) to submit to the council to guarantee your exemption.

Voting in the UK

I wish I knew that I could register to vote in the UK, even if I only live in Luton/Bedford during term time. It’s important to know your rights and have a voice in local elections.

Student Travel & Discounts

I wish I knew that I could buy discounted travel cards like 16-25 railcards (even if you are above 25), student bus pass and national express coach cards to reduce the cost of transportation.

I wish I knew that I could sign up for Unidays or Student beans to access student discounts at a variety of shops on the high street and online.

I wish I knew that I could eat breakfast and lunch at the campus canteen for discounted rates of £3.65 and £3, respectively.

I wish I knew that showing my student ID gets me discounted activities such as; movies, bowling and arcade games in the galaxy, Luton town centre. It is a great way to save money and enjoy spare time with new friends. It is worth checking the Vue website Luton and Vue Bedford regularly for movies offers and promotions.

National Insurance Number

I wish I knew that it is important to obtain your national insurance number for your part time job. It is your official ID for work in the UK.

University Laptop loan scheme

I wish I knew that I could borrow laptops directly from the university library customer service desk in Luton and Bedford between 8:30am and 6pm, Monday- Friday for temporary use (one week). This means that if you borrow a laptop on a Monday, it should be returned by 10pm, the following Monday or else you MUST pay a fee of £700.

Income Tax

I wish I knew that I could earn up to £12,570 before having to pay income tax

Student Staff perks

I wish I knew that working for the Students' Union allows you to fit your work easily around your studies.
