Mark the Work, Not the Algorithm

petition submitted by Christine Juden on Jan 12, 2026.

petition Description

UK universities are increasingly using AI detection tools to flag student work as “AI-generated.” But these systems are known to produce false positives and cannot reliably prove whether AI was used. Some universities have already recognised these flaws and chosen to switch AI detection off, acknowledging that it is not fair or accurate enough to use against students.

Yet many students are still being subjected to automated suspicion. When an algorithm wrongly flags genuine work, students are forced to defend themselves against an unreliable system. This is stressful, unfair, and knocks confidence in students who have done nothing wrong. It replaces trust in education with fear of being falsely accused.

We call on The University Of Bedfordshire to either switch off AI-detection tools in assessment or allow students to upload and check their own work for AI scores before submission. Unreliable algorithms and false positives are unfair on students and damage confidence. Assessment should be transparent, supportive, and led by human judgment — not hidden software.

Students deserve Fairness. Students deserve Transparency.
