A NEW VOICE IN THE BEACON

Who is Amia Clarke?

My name is Amia Clarke, Editor of The Beacon. I’m a third-year Journalism student, who loves to immerse herself into all aspects of digital storytelling. I have exercised my journalistic skills throughout my time at university, but I’ve never done something like this. I’m honoured to be joined by a talented team of students who are keen to also positively impact our university environment. I aspire to make The Beacon mirror the voice of the students; speaking on current issues amongst our society and generation, covering student events and ideally including contributions from anybody reading this!

What to expect from me

Not only do I want students to view this platform as a way of keeping up with campus activities, but I’d like it to create unity amongst students. We all study different courses and have varied timetables; some students aren’t even involved in societies, so they may feel disconnected from their university experience. Like RadioLab, The Beacon is made for our students by our students. It’s a network to churn out content that reflects what students want to read. Our team will ensure that our content is relatable, reliable and useful to students- even if that means collecting ideas from students themselves.

Why I’m excited to be here

First of all, I love to write. Writing is my preferred method of communication; I’ve always claimed that I can write things better than I can say them. My love for writing is what affirmed my decision to become a journalist, and then I fell in love with every other aspect of it. Secondly, I came into university with movie-like expectations; I expected there to be a higher sense of community and involvement. Our university already has these qualities, but I know that The Beacon will further this by having students as representatives of our generation, rather than someone older having to attempt to.

But most importantly, I love both being a student and engaging with other students. I’ve tried to involve myself in several aspects of university, but this is arguably my favourite project yet. My excitement is bubbling, because I know that great things will come from The Beacon, and our team will leave a long-lasting impact on The University of Bedfordshire.
