This video is part of our ongoing Student Rights campaign, designed to help students understand the support available to them during difficult times.

Hauwa and Jon Stanley break down the difference between mitigation and self-certification, two key processes that can affect assessment outcomes.

If you’ve ever been unsure when to self-certify or when to apply for mitigation, this video explains what each means and when to use them.

Steps to Take:

  • Submit your request via the SID portal as soon as possible.
  • Include evidence (e.g., medical notes, letters) in PDF, Word, or JPEG format.
  • Do not submit work or attend the exam if you plan to apply—mitigation cannot be applied retroactively.
  • Submit within 7 calendar days of the affected deadline.
  • Only the SEAM team can approve mitigation—academic staff cannot.
