What’s Happening and Why?

The Governing Document is the blueprint for how Beds SU runs and represents students.

The current version uses a model template developed by the National Union of Students (NUS) in 2016. It is comprehensive, running to 38 pages, and adopts complex language common in a legal document in English law.

In responding to feedback NUS have now published a new version that is more accessible, flexible and adaptable.

The Trustees feel the new Governing Document will allow the Students’ Union to evolve with the interests of its Student Members and enable students to better lead within the Students’ Union.

What are the proposals?

The new version uses clearer language and fewer words to make it more accessible for students – it is less effort to read and easier to follow (shorter sentences and paragraphs) and reduced complexity.

The new version allows us to better respond to change at the University and among students, and it clarifies the legal and employment aspects of Student Trustees to ensure fairness and transparency. With the updated structure, the new document is less dense. This helps students find key information faster and ensures important points stand out more clearly.

Much of the detailed processes set out in the current document will be removed from the new version so they can be adapted more easily in time. This means the Articles will focus on the big-picture stuff, making it simpler and easier to navigate.

What Does This Mean for You?

Whether you’re voting in elections, attending meetings or just curious about how things work, these changes will make it easier to get involved and understand what’s going on.

The simplified document makes it easier for students to suggest changes and have a real impact on how the Union runs.

These changes ensure Beds SU stays effective and focused on supporting and representing students.

We Want to Hear from You!

Beds SU is your students’ union so it’s only right that you have a say – do you think the changes are a good idea? Could the proposals be improved? Or perhaps a different approach should be taken entirely?

We’re launching a consultation period starting today (20 February 2025) and we’re keen to hear from students. Here’s how you can get involved:

Review the proposed changes and background in a more detailed document [here].

Share your thoughts: Do you have suggestions, concerns, or alternatives? Let us know by emailing help@bedssu.co.uk to tell us you have feedback on our Governing Document. Be sure to leave your student ID number.

What Happens Next?

After the consultation period we’ll review all your feedback and make any necessary tweaks before asking students to approve or reject the changes.
