We have seen the introduction of cycle lanes, bikes, and scooters for hire in towns across the UK and now it’s the turn of the roller-skates.

In a time when we are all becoming more aware about the impact emissions have on the environment and how we can find new ways to reduce our carbon footprint, here at Beds SU we are excited to announce that we have signed up to a new ‘Skate to commute’ initiative.

The new initiative will be 'rolled out', from today, April 1, as a pilot across a few UK cities and towns including Luton, Bedford and Birmingham, which offers our students an opportunity to get involved.

How the scheme will work

The plan will see skate lanes created in the chosen pilot locations, like those already available for bikes and scooters. The skate routes will be signposted with glitterball symbols both on the ground and on signposts to help skaters get to and from their destinations safely. The scheme will also showcase some of the key sights of each participating town and city with a ‘figure of eight’ specially mapped route.

As part of the initiative Beds SU has been given several pairs of skates and safety gear which can be rented daily for students wishing to try out this new trend.

Get your skates on

If you are new to roller-skating or it’s been a while since you skated at your local roller disco, then why not come along to one of our taster sessions. The sessions will take place at 11am today at ‘Duck Walk’, Luton, ‘Grapevine Lane’, Bedford and ‘Scissors Way’, Birmingham. Simply click here to register your interest.

“We are really excited to be supporting this new scheme which not only has environmental benefits but is a brilliant way of getting fit and supporting your mental well-being.”

The initiative has come about following an increase in individuals choosing to roller-skate to work across several cities since the pandemic when people chose to swap public transport for alternative methods.
