Advice on saving money whilst studying

Saving money whilst at university can seem somewhat of an oxymoron, but it is possible. Laura Tamara, Female Co-President of Beds SU shares her thoughts on how to do this.

With the current UK cost of living crisis pressures, sensible spending is becoming the new norm. Businesses understand this and are rewarding customers with loyalty schemes through apps, with discounts, freebies and vouchers. Below are few ideas from me on how to make your student budget go further and save money.

Cafes / eating establishments:

Many cafes make cost reductions when you present your own reusable cup (look out for these discounts across our campus outlets), similarly, you  could invest in a resuable water bottle and enjoy unlimited free refills on campus, and it’s a great way to be sustainable and reduce the use of plastic.

Look for the meal deals in our venues too and when eating out or in the supermarkets, always check the offers.

Keeping fit:

Budget conscious gym bunnies can ditch the ball and chain membership by joining our Sports teams and Get Active. Boost endorphins with a brisk walk, run or by cycling to campus. I bought a fantastic, reconditioned bike for just £20 at last year’s Welcome Fair, bikes are a cost-effective way to commute. It is worth investing in a robust ‘D’ lock to secure your bike whilst attending lectures on campus.

Make a meal go that little bit further

Be creative with leftovers and bring your own lunch from home to reduce food waste. Jamie Oliver has some budget friendly recipes and BBC Good Food have some great leftover recipe inspiration. You could consider investing in a food flask to keep your food warm for up to 6 hours and talk to us, your Students Union, to support you in lobbying for a communal microwave if you don’t already have one on your campus. Last term we succeeded in getting this achieved for Birmingham based students.

Don’t be afraid to ask

Many brands and business offer students discount but don’t shout about it. Before paying, don’t be afraid to ask ‘do you offer discounts to students’ the worst they can say is no.

Swap and share

Avoid overconsumption and waste by swapping and sharing within your student community. This can apply to clothes, food, commuting and is a great way to connect with others.

Energy costs

If you are concerned about energy bills there are lots of tips out there from providers themselves, student sites such as Save the Student and money saving sites including MoneySavingExperts. You can also manage your accounts online and check you’re placed on the cheapest tariff possible. If you are in halls or rented accommodation, this might be set for you, so check your contract or speak with your landlord.

Remember be savvy, every penny counts.
