For many people it's that time of the year to move out of rented student accommodation. It can be a potentially stressful time as socialising is mixed with exams and bag packing, so our expert Advice Team have put together some simple yet effective tips to help.
Checklist
1. Plan your departure
In the days before you have to leave, make a checklist of everything that needs to be done and by when. This simple step will concentrate your mind and make it easier to get everything done in time.
2. Move out on time
One of the most stressful things is not leaving enough time to pack. You don't want to be stuffing things in boxes while the landlord is waiting for the keys! Find out in advance the time you need to be out and stick to it.
3. Leave the property in a good and clean condition
Most, if not all contracts will require you to clean the property to the same standard as when you moved in. This means cleaning EVERYTHING and emptying those cupboards that you've been avoiding. Leaving your accommodation clean and tidy will also give you a much better chance of keeping your deposit.
4. Contact utility suppliers
If you have been paying for utilities like water, electricity and gas, it's important that you take your final meter readings on the day you move out. You should then pay your bills as soon as possible and close the accounts. Remember to provide suppliers with your forwarding address.
5. Carry out an inventory check with photographs
It's very important to check your inventory when you move out. If anything is missing it will more than likely be taken out of your deposit or you will be asked to pay for it. Try to be there when your landlord or agent does a check out inventory when you move out.
Good luck!
