“I wish I knew about life at uni”
Breo
I wish I knew that Breo, the university's main resource platform, could be easily accessed through the MyBedsLife app. Learning to use it properly from the start makes a big difference, as it helps you stay on top of course materials, timetables, assignments and grades. Having the app on your phone also keeps you connected to campus updates, emails and events wherever you are.
The Student Information Desk (SiD) found on the 2nd floor of the G block Luton and in the Gateway Building, G1.01 on the first floor of Bedford campus, can guide you on how to download and navigate it effectively.
University Email account
I wish I knew how important it is to regularly check my university emails. Most official communication from the university such as timetable changes, assignment updates, or support opportunities comes through email, along with communications from the Students’ Union. Checking it frequently ensures you don’t miss out on crucial information.
Personal Academic Tutors (PAT)
I wish I knew about personal academic tutors (PAT) from the start. Personal academic tutors are there to guide and support you throughout your studies. Knowing who your tutor is early on means you can build a relationship, seek advice when you’re struggling, and get the right academic support before small issues turn into bigger ones. You can find your personal academic tutors name on EVision.
Academic Support
I wish I knew about the academic support tools available. For example, using Studiosity for assignments and learning how to make the most of lecturer feedback really improved my confidence and grades. In my first semester, I didn’t fully understand the UK marking system, and this made me uncertain about my progress. Making use of these tools earlier would have made a big difference.
Academic Skills Training
I wish I knew that taking extra classes, like academic skills training is worth it. At first, they may not seem like a big deal, but these sessions strengthen your communication and academic skills, which are invaluable in the long run.
Student Support
I wish I knew about the Student Support earlier. Located on the second floor, G Block on Luton campus and in P Block, room P0.31a, Bedford campus. These are the places to go for help with a wide range of issues from academic queries to personal support. We sometimes underestimate the impact personal issues and stress can have on our studies, knowing where to go and who to talk to before it reaches crisis point is important as it saves a lot of time and makes a huge difference in navigating university life.
Free Gym Membership
I wish I knew I had a free gym membership as a student. University of Bedfordshire offers free access to campus gyms and fitness classes for students. Knowing this earlier would have saved money and encouraged me to stay active without worrying about extra costs. It’s also a great way to meet other students and improve your overall well-being.
Free Cloud Storage
I wish I knew I had free cloud storage using the OneDrive account linked to my student email. This makes it easy to back up coursework, collaborate on projects, and access files from anywhere without worrying about losing data or carrying USB drives.
Assessment Support
I wish I knew that I could apply for mitigating circumstances if I was going through a difficult time that affected my ability to complete an assessment or perform well. This support can give students extra time or flexibility when they need it the most.
Appeal Process
I wish I knew that it is possible to submit an appeal if there were circumstances beyond your control that affected your results for example, severe illness at the time of the assessment or a university administration issue. You can contact the beds SU advice team on help@bedssu.co.uk to find out about appeals support.
