We recently surveyed students to understand the impacts of the economic crisis on them and their studies. Here’s what you said and here’s what we have done.
What you said
Out of 1,259 of students that took part, 84% agreed they were worried “they would not be able to afford basic necessities due to the rising cost of living.” Almost half of the students, 49%, ‘strongly agreed’ with the statement.
88% of students agreed with the statement “The rising cost of living has put strain on my finances”. 50% of you ‘strongly agreed’.
80% of students agreed that “the rising cost of living is having a negative impact on my university studies”.
The most desired support measures from students were financial. Suggestions we received were fee reduction, loans/bursaries/grants/discounts; travel cost mitigations through deals with travel companies, free parking or online classes; campus food options/offers and job opportunities.
What we are doing
Your Beds SU elected Sabbatical Officers continue to focus on the cost of living and its impact on students. The officers are supporting the National Union of Students’ campaign for a dedicated student ‘cost of living package’ from the government. If you would like to show your support for this campaign, please head to the NUS website and sign the petition.
We are offering short term support to students with the Community Pantry. This is FREE for all students who will be able to choose 8 items ranging from soup, pasta, rice, tinned vegetables and more.
This is being trialled first in the Luton campus with, depending on usage and resources, chance to be extended to other campuses. To access the Community Pantry you can email our advice team. For ALL the information on the Community Pantry please read the linked article.
Your Sabbatical Officers delivered a publicised ‘Cook Off’ competition in student accommodation, judged by the Vice Chancellor, to raise awareness of low-cost meals.
The Officers have also met MPs Sarah Owen, Rachel Hopkins and Mohammed Yasin with each agreeing to write to the Government in support of the NUS Campaign and to seek additional Government support for students.
As of release of this article, the Government has so far announced a financial package to help students with living costs via an additional £15 million in hardship funding to universities, as well as a further freeze on tuition fees for two years.
