We understand that students get a huge amount of communications from across University departments throughout the year and it can sometimes be hard to grasp that requirements and call to action students need to make.

Chidinma Akwada, your Co-President (Self-identifying Woman) has been talking to many of you about how and when you are given important information and improvements you believe are required. She says:

"As one of the Co-Presidents of the Students’ Union at the University one of my passion projects for this academic year is working with staff and students to enhance communications at the University."

Clear and concise

Written communication is important and needs to be concise, clear and fulfil its intended purpose.

Because of the lack of body language and tone of voice, this form of communication can tend to feel impersonal. However, it still has a tone, and tone affects how the information is understood.

Avoid confusion

Some students have told us that emails, articles, and policies that they receive from the University can sometimes be confusing or upsetting, which leads to information being misunderstood. To help solve this problem Chidinma is looking to launch the Reading Group.

My plan is to get as many student volunteers as possible to join the group, to review communications from the University and offer feedback on how they are perceived. The feedback will be shared with relevant stakeholders within the University to help inform their future communications.

If you would like to be part of a team dedicated to ensuring all communications from across the University is clear, transparent and accessible then join Chidinma by clicking the link here to register your interest.  To ensure the views of all students are heard we will be reserving places for students across all demographics (home, international, mature, parent/carer, those who identify as members of our LGBT+, Disabled and BaME networks).

Alongside being a much-needed project, being involved in it is an experience that can be added to one’s CV. All volunteers will remain anonymous and will be able to review documents at their own time and place.

So if you'd like to get involved, sign up now!"
