100 pages plus- should UoB be reducing their printing?

We've seen the University print multiple hard copies of meeting papers which are 100+ pages and now Beds SU believes the University of Bedfordshire should reduce unnecessary printing to lower the institution’s environmental impact. What are your thoughts?

Beds SU is run by students for students and therefore you, the student body, get to decide what we work on. We currently want your opinion on whether we should be working to get the University to have a more representative student support team and how we go about doing this. Our policy ideal outlines what we think we should be asking for but we need your opinions so we know we are working on the right things.

Tell us your feedback by filling in the online form or attending our workshop on Thursday 9th May 11am on Zoom

The Ideal: Reduce Unnecessary Printing

Beds SU believes the University of Bedfordshire should reduce unnecessary printing to lower the institution’s environmental impact.

Our ideal situation looks like this:

  • All UoB departments should be required to conduct termly internal audits recording printing activity (i.e., meetings/activities for which printing is carried out; the volume and frequency of printing carried out)
  • The UoB Sustainability Steering Group should commit to reviewing print audit reports and discuss where reductions in printing output could be made
  • All UoB staff utilising printers should be required to complete mandatory training on how to lower the environmental impact of printing, including – but not limited to:
  1. Use double-sided printing and copying
  2. Use smaller font, reduce line spacing and margins for larger documents
  3. Properly recycle all paper
  4. Configure printers to the most energy-efficient settings (contingent on the model) when not in use, i.e., eco-mode or quiet mode
  • When replacing printers, the UoB should commit to switching to models which consume less energy

What's a Policy Ideal?

The SU's way of setting out what our beliefs are and the ideal situation students want us to be working towards.

What do we need from you?

Read the proposal and let us know if that would be your ideal situation or if you think things need changing or if you have stories or evidence to enhance our policy
