Guided meditation can be practiced for as long as you wish from a few minutes to hours. The belief is building this practice in your life can help individuals reduce stress and promote mental and physical wellbeing.
On Monday 15 May Beds SU will be holding a guided meditation in the Metro, Luton campus from 14:00-16:00. This event is FREE to attend just come dressed in comfortable clothes! The session will offer attendees to listen to a recorded mindful session. We wanted to complement the session with some links to other guides here that you can do whenever you choose as well as offer a little more insight into the practice.
So what is Mindfulness and how do you get started? According to Mental Health charity Mind:
‘Mindfulness is a technique you can learn which involves noticing what’s happening in the present moment, without judgement…The technique has roots in Buddhism and meditation, but you don’t have to be spiritual, or have any particular beliefs, to try it.’
The charity goes on to share the five core benefits of mindfulness:
• become more self-aware
• feel calmer and less stressed
• feel more able to choose how to respond to your thoughts and feelings
• cope with difficult or unhelpful thoughts
• be kinder towards yourself
There are many forms of meditation from in person and online classes and courses. It is a personal preference though just like any form or physical activity or hobby and if you are new to it, then getting an idea of why you want to practice can help as outlined by Mind here.
The UK’s NHS (National Health Service) also offers support and guidance.
If you are looking to practice in your own home then YouTube offers a variety of recorded online sessions such as this one:
