Start a New Society

New societies can be requested by three students filling in the online 'New Group Application form' as the link below. Do you and two other students have a common interest,  or an amazing idea for a student group? Think there's a gap in what's on offer? Or perhaps a group of students could benefit from peer support?

Why not submit an "New Group Application form' for Beds SU to start a new society?

The process

  1. Find two more students to start a society with you! (Can't find anyone else? Let us know by emailing help@bedssu.co.uk and we'll give you a shout-out in a newsletter)
  2. Fill in a New Group Application Form (Your details, including your UoB I.D. number and name of the proposed society) The form will be reviewed by a member of the Social Opportunities Committee
  3. If your application is successful, a society webpage will be set up on the Beds SU website at the following link: https://bedssu.co.uk/societies where students will be able to purchase their free membership to join the society

If you require any assistance with this process, please email us on help@bedssu.co.uk

The benefits

Societies are run by Beds SU and are open to all students at the University of Bedfordshire. Below are some of the main benefits of starting a society but there are so many more:

  • With the support of Beds SU staff, society members will have opportunities to go on events and trips financially supported by Beds SU. (this could be fundraising events, attending conferences and much much more... Contact us at help@bedssu.co.uk to arrange a meeting to discuss your society ideas)
  • Upon registration, an invitation to join your society online chat forum to talk with other society members and leave messages whenever it suits you!
  • Meet people who are like-minded and have similar interests to you
  • Being part of a society gives you numerous opportunities to gain skills, make new friends and try new experiences
  • Regular societies newsletter updates about up and coming events for your society, including general Beds SU events which may also interest you

Affiliation rules

We will base our decision to affiliate societies based on the following criteria set out in our Societies Rules and Regulations:

  • Demonstrate that the society will operate under and does not contravene any Freedom of Speech Policy in place at the time of application.
  • Demonstrate that the society does not encourage behaviour likely to be deemed as misconduct as defined in the Beds SU Members’ Code of Conduct;
  • Any external affiliations declared are in line with the External Affiliations/sponsorship guidelines, section 8.(Any unintended/perceived external affiliations will also be considered in line with section 8.)
  • Have a clear name that lets Union members know explicitly what the society does.
  • Societies should have a unique purpose that is significantly different from any other society
  • Be best supported through Beds SU rather than the UoB sports department

Full guidance on the affiliation process can be found in the Societies Rules and Regulations
