Start a New Society

Have a group of friends with a common interest? Or an amazing idea for a student group? Think there's a gap in what's on offer? Or perhaps a group of students could benefit from peer support?

Why not start a new society?

The process

  1. Find someone else to help run the society with you! (Can't find anyone else? Let us know by emailing and we'll give you a shout-out in a newsletter)
  2. Fill in a New Group Application Form (Your details, name of your proposed society, membership price (must be minimum £1), aims & objectives of your society, committee positions and their job roles, any external affiliations you wish to have)
  3. The form will be reviewed by a member of the Be Involved Team
  4. If your application is successful you will be invited to training and to complete an Individual Society Constitution

The benefits

Societies are student-led groups open to all students at the University of Bedfordshire, they are run by an elected committee which must include a Chairperson, Treasurer, and Secretary. All membership fees go directly into your society's account for you to do as you see fit with. Below are some of the main benefits of starting a society but there are so many more:

  • Access to funding - the SU provides grants of up to £200 plus your membership fees go straight to your society
  • Meet people who are like-minded and have similar interests to you
  • Gain transferable skills and employability skills- being part of a society gives you numerous opportunities to gain skills
  • You are able to hold events or go on trips with the support of Beds SU staff- this could be fundraising events, attending conferences and much much more...

Affiliation rules

We will base our decision to affiliate societies based on the following criteria set out in our Societies code of practice:

  • Demonstrate that the society will operate under and does not contravene any Freedom of Speech Policy approved by the membership and in place at the time of application.
  • Demonstrate that the society does not encourage behaviour likely to be deemed as misconduct as defined in the Beds SU Members’ Code of Conduct;
  • Demonstrate that the society is a feasible and sustainable venture, measured through interest from the current membership, affordability for members, plans submitted and national trends (where applicable);
  • Any external affiliations declared are in line with the External Affiliations/sponsorship guidelines, section 8.(Any unintended/perceived external affiliations will also be considered in line with section 8.)
  • Have a clear name that lets Union members know explicitly what the society does.
  • Societies should have a unique purpose that is significantly different from any other society
  • Have clear aims and objectives that do not directly duplicate another society or union department;
  • Be best supported through the societies department rather than the sports department

Full guidance on the affiliation process can be found in the Societies Code of Practice.
