The role of the Board

The Trustee Board is a committee of the charity’s trustees. They have ultimate responsibility for ensuring the Union’s administration, governance and strategy are undertaken in pursuit of its objectives:

To be the representative body of all students at the University of Bedfordshire and to advance the education of students by,

  1. promoting their interests and welfare
  2. being their recognised representative channel with the University
  3. providing social, cultural and recreational activities for their personal development.

Together, the trustees are to “exercise the same degree of care in dealing with the administration of their charity as a prudent business-person would exercise in the conduct of their own affairs (sic).”

Through collective, balanced and informed decisions, the trustees achieve this by:

  • delegating (e.g. to staff)
  • establishing and evaluating controls (e.g. policies and procedures)
  • effective oversight (e.g. receiving reports, making decisions on strategy, budgets, etc.)

The Board brings together those currently in study at the University with professionals, appointed to the Board, so that the Board benefits from experience and knowledge.

The Trustee Board is made up of;

  • 2 x Student Trustees, appointed ex officio when elected as Co-Presidents of the SU
  • 4 x Student Trustees, appointed by the Board from among the student membership
  • 4 x External Trustees
  • 1 x University-appointed Trustee

A Co-President of the Students’ Union acts as Chair of the Board.

External trustees are asked to support particular leadership duties, such as acting as vice-chairs for sub-committees or supporting the line-management of the CEO with an elected student.
